Default Trailer Tie Down Question

For those that trailer their C5, can you tell me how you strap it down? What tie downs do I need? and can you provide a source? Do I need a special type of hook for the C5? I know so many questions, sorry i'm new to this game. My trailer will be here in 2 weeks. I am having them weld D rings to the deck if that means anything. I did not like the idea of tieing off to stake pockets. Thanks guy's I appreciate the help.

Sounds like you have an open trailer. If that's the case you have two good options. Over the wheel straps work well - you'll need 4, 2 each side secured to the d-rings - I believe that they are available at 800) 327-3301). T hooks are maybe a better choice. T-hooks utilize the factory anchoring slots under the rocker panels. They can be found at many sites including Northern Tool - Item# 3309048. If you use the T-hooks it's best to cross the straps under the car. For example the left rear hook will connect via a tie-down strap to the D-ring at the right front side of the car.

No problem - you can go cheaper, but you get what you pay for.

My fav thing is something I hope never need to use

Aluminum Tandem Axle Trailer Jack
Safe and easy way to change the tires on your tandem axle trailer. You can also use these as levelers for your RV or travel trailer. Plus they make great wheel chocks when you turn them over. USA MADE

Well I may be a little late with a solution but ya never know.

Go here: http://www.snappinturtle.com and at the top you will find a link to "Towing Accessories."

Scroll down the page and you will find an R-Frame Hook for GM/Chrysler. You need 4 and they will fit in the shipping pockets of your car. You will need to attach a 3/8 shackle to each R-Frame Hook so that you can get the hooked end of a strap to hook onto them. The straps and ratchets can be obtained from any Home Depot and are rated at 10,000 Lbs.

Attach an R-Frame Hook to each pocket with a shackle already attached to it. Then hook the strap into the shackle and cross it to the other side of the trailer. The ratchets will be hooked to the D-Ring in that corner of the trailer. All you have to do is slip in the strap and crank it down.

In no case would I recommend you wrap straps around the wheels or any suspension component. This is because the ratchets can exert an enormous amount of force when you crank them down and they can pull a suspension apart. On the other hand if you attach at the frame and criss cross the straps the ratchets can't hurt the car and it can't go anywhere.

You need 4 and they attach, as seen from the drivers seat, like this:

Left front shipping pocket to right front corner of trailer
Right front shipping pocket to left front corner of trailer

Left rear shipping pocket to right rear corner of trailer
Right rear shipping pocket to left rear corner of trailer

This assumes each corner of the trailer has a D-Ring mounted in it.

Nice, now I recommend you have them weld a winch plate on while they are doing the D rings

"Usually" the winch is mounted forward of the deck, that winch is probably as tall as your front spoiler is low, on an 18" it might be ok, but 16" you might have issues.

I say usually, because I am doing something out of the norm - using a removable setup.

I recommend you find the best position on the trailer with the car on it, then decide if the deck offers you the room needed, if you decided to deck mount.

Dead center is perfect

Looks like your right, AGAIN When the trailer gets here i'll see where and how to fit the winch. I'll then get something made for mounting it.

Called snappinturtle today to see where the hooks are. They said good news, bad news. We got your order Back ordered for approximately 3 weeks. Since I wrecked the car it's not like i'm in a rush, just would be nice to have if the car is repaired this month. Got the call this morning, trailer is here already. Hope they built it properly. In light of my last 2 weeks of bad luck, i'm hoping the trailer actually has wheels.

Make sure the load is far enough front to put enough downward pressure on the hitch. Otherwise you get the wiggles when you are traveling at highway speeds. I have made a mark on the trailer so I know where that is.
