Most sanctioned drag strips require a helmet for any vert regardless of time or any coupe running below 14 seconds...the helmet must be safety rated appropriately by the Snell Foundation...
That said, I don't make a pass without my helmet, period...

When racing the HPS Corvette Challenge, you must have a helmet no matter what time you run. No helmet, no race.

My favorite Prostock racer, back in the day, was killed in the mid eighties just practicing his sixty foot times without a helmet. The car got out of shape, flipped and killed him. I always wear a helmet. James

You get on a track you should wear a helmet, We had a problem at this years Forum Cruise In where someone was hurt not wearing a helmet and it will never happen again.

I asked the same thing at my local track the first time I went drag racing ever. Track official just looked at me and said, "How many heads you got?"
So I guess that meant "Yes, wear a helmet"

At Maple Grove in Reading PA you don't need a helmet running 14.0 and slower. I was "allowed" to run my 14.5 firebird 'vert without a helmet running brackets against 9.0 cars coming by at 130mph+. Even if I run a 17 second ride I always put on the helmet.
