I'm thinking about switching from my 12-bolt posi (IRS) to a spool and I wonder if that would give me a noticeable improvement in my ET's as the spool is about 20 lbs lighter than a posi???
Has anybody done that (without any other changes) and what were the results?
I'm mostly interested in it from a performance and not strength perspective as the posi unit in my diff is very strong...
That would be sweet.. Maybe I'll get the spool before the national Corvettechallenge..
My best is 10.35 in 62 degree weather.. If I'll get another tenth off with the spool, I'd be at 10.25.. If I'd be able to race in 45 degree weather, I might get into the 10.0x range on engine... That would be sweeeeeeet!! A 100 shot could get me deep into the 9's then..
I have to go with whatever Tom's offers as those spools are modified by toms to fit their 12-bolt IRS setups..
I have a spool made for a Corvette diff by Strange Engineering many years ago, it has been sitting in a box for the last 20 years or so, solid shaft w/bolt on side yokes.....neat piece if anyone is interested...

The spool will make the car hande different than it does now.
When you turn, it will nose dive on you and make those turns wide. When you make turns the steering wheel will want to kick back .
If you get crossed up just let out of the gas and the car will come back around.Make sure you stage streight.
For a drag car it is the only way to go. www.dragvette.com is another good site and they will give you alot of info. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:...s&ct=clnk&cd=2

Like Jim said, If you are going to do it get a lightened one. A car with a spool drives a little different, but not that noticeable, until you try to push it around a corner
Good luck on the 9's.......it will happened this year for sure.

As I said before, I can only go with the spool that Tom's Differentials offers as no other spools will fit my setup.. Those are specifically machined to fit my differential case..

Oliver, the Tom's spool is an 8.8 ford, 31 spline piece, with one end (driver's side i beleive) machined .200 shorter. If you know of a good machine sho and you take him the new spool and your current posi setup they should be able to modify it with no problems

hmmm.. I'd need to know for sure if it's the drivers side... I wonder how much a machine shop would charge to modify the spool and install it???
Tom's wants $600 and I'll get my posi back. Strange makes a lightweight chromoly spool ($188.69 at Summit)
If it would be less than $400 at the machine shop, it'll be cheaper that way...

if I had a 8.8 spool i could tell you, as i have 4 Tom's pieces. I'd just need to measure
