Thanks for the pics! That helps alot. I have been trying to decide which way to go with my swap. I might do something along your lines of mounting the axle by way of a four link. At least if I do it that way I can have the car on the road this summer. Or I might just pull the body and go all out cutout the rear frame section and narrow the frame and go with a big tire car. Then I could have the frame dipped and painted and lighten up the front end with a-arms and brakes. But I know it would be at least another year before it makes out on the road if I go that route. decisions, decisions.....

or you could call Tom's Differentials, have a bulletproof bolt in setup and NOT butcher your car

I'd heard that TOM was working-on a way to adapt his 12-bolt modification to the '80-'82 Dana-44 IRS (previously restricted to the pre-'79 IRS), so I could run a spool, which would be nice.....

That's the problem with Tom's.. They are not very fast as they seem to be backed up.. I waited over 2 months for mine...

Did the 5-point bar significantly stiffen the car, and would it be necessary to have the bar if the solid-axle was added:
I'd be more-inclined to go with an 8-point bar, but am interested if your bar is a 'structural'-piece of the axle-swap.

Thanks-in-advance!

I just E-mailed AutoFab for some prices! I'll be having a fresh Tom's 10 bolt for sale! I guess you can make the Vette IRS work but with a blown roller cam 468 making 750-800 hp and making butt loads of torque I think it's good money after bad!

I put a hold on the body work while I checked into a rear change, I'm glad I did, it will have a soild axle!

And as you can see it was "hacked up" long ago!

lol that it was. I just hate to see people put a straight axle in one of these cars when its not needed. The stock suspension design is very capable and will hook when even the best straight axle spins (given same tire size). There was a guy who competed in "Drag Week" last year running low nines and high eights with a Tom's setup. I'm sure it will take 700-800 hp, no problem. We have several hundred passes on the rear in our stocker, which is around 600 hp, and much more efficient in most street strip cars.

I’m no traditionalist, I have a SBC (soon to be BBC) powered Cobra kit car, the Blue-Oval boyz love me! I like the most direct route to where I want to be. I’ll put an adjustable coil over 4-link up against a stock style Vette setup any day. Again, yes it can be done but you still have 2 drive shafts and 4 U-joints you don’t need! And when all is said and done you still have a GM 12-bolt!

Now if this were an unmolested 68 big block I would have a whole different attitude (NO TOUCH-EE)!

Hey VetteMan,

For me there’s no one way a car, any car should be. But if you make me choose how a car of mine is going to be, function is going to trump every thing else, every time! Now I’m sure we both agree there are many ways to achieve the function we are looking for. Some ways are crude and/or obtrusive while others are elegant and seamless with the original concept and intent. And yes a solid rear axle in a C-3, even when well done is a bit on the crude side in all but its function as a straight-line racer!

It’s just at this point on this project my patient’s and interest are rapidly running out. I have been on again off again with this for almost 7 years now. The blown 468 is the 3rd engine I have had for it. I even had a GMPP 572/620 between the fenders at one time. A long frustrating story I will not go into other than to say, there is a lot of people out there that can’t or will not do the jobs they take on! If I like what AutoFab has to offer it’s going to be pretty much a done deal! I want this thing DONE!
