Help in rear tire selection, just for strip day. Stock motor Z, W/approx 400 RWHP, H/D Diff (390), w/ECS bracing, 03 Z06. Plan on using a 17"x9 1/2" Z wheel in the rear. Want tire that will be some what forgiving on drive train(diff), but give good 1/4 result. In past, have used 18x10 1/2 Z wheel w/ P315/30R18 BFG Drag Radials. 11.9 et.'s , (w/ stock Z 342 gear) Never have broke any thing. They seem to hook good but seem like an achor towards the end of track. Usually w/17-18 lbs of air. Keep in mind that I'll now be running 3:90 gears. Thanks in advance.
I think the 17" Mickey Thompson ET Streets (bias ply) would be a good idea for you, especially if you're going to be changing them at the track/not driving them on the street or highway. They can help cushion some of the blow to the rear on a hard launch and hook very well.
At your power level, most will likely recommend one of the many (BFG, M/T, Hoosier, Toyo, Nitto etc.) 275-40-17 drag radials out there and they'd be correct as well but some also feel that radials tend to be a little less forgiving to the rear and other driveline parts than the bias plies might be.
M/T also makes a 295-45-17 drag radial that might be another option seeing as you have 3.90 gears and it's overall height won't hurt your gearing/final drive ratio as much as it would if you had 3.42s.
