Some of you may recall a thread back in Aug. where I was giving props to a buddy of mine who drove my Mustang 6 rounds into a big money race at Atco. Well yesterday was the 2nd annual Door Slammer Nationals...5k to win top bulb and 2.5k to win the bottom bulb race. My daughter's bday prevented me from going so I again loaned out the Mustang to the Boy Wonder (as Redgar calls him). He entered top bulb for the big 5k prize.
I won't bore you all again with the round by round recap and just cut to the chase. Six round wins and an appearance in the Finals. His lights were: .000, .009, .003, .015, .021, .010, .004 & .011. And the big Ford performed flawlessly...until the 7th and final round
We still don't the extent of the problem, but the car fell on its face on the launch and apparently (I didn't arrive until just after the final) sparks were flying out the exhaust. So my driver smartly shut it down and called for the tow.
Now oddly enough, his opponent broke as well, but was able to coast across the finish for the big win. The winner btw was the great Bob Mullaney, who actually doubled up and won both the top bulb and bottom bulb races...on the footbrake for both. A big congrats to him and his team.
That is still a heck of a job...your shoe was killing the tree...congrats...Mullaney is one tough customer...
Thanks Dan. I can't say enough good things about this kid. He's killer on the tree and plays the top end very well too (one round taking .0009 stripe on the binders).
Most of all I'm impressed with how he just shut it down at the first sign of engine trouble. The car still had power and with 2 grand on the line, he could have easily limped it across the finish.
Marc,
Your buddy can sure drive. It was also good that he shut the car off to prevent any further possible damage. Sorry to hear about the car though. Is the new motor ready yet?

I would be happy with just one of those 00s (or even 01s) per season...this guy is bustin' em out like nothin' all in one race!
Congrats to him (and the mighty Mustang) for almost goin' all the way.

Thanks Gary. The block is still at the machine shop. We have all the parts and will be ready for assembly as soon as it gets here. Shooting for the first week in November.

You and me both Marc. I see a .00x once in a while, but it is purely by accident And I'm sure to be late on the next run.

Did they split the money?
Still want to see get a few wins in that killer car
Like anything there's a learning curve with top bulb racing. Once you get it down, quicker, more consistent lights are possible with a delay box as opposed to footbraking. But the really good footbrakers can still compete and win in top bulb.
The pot was $5000 to win, $2000 for RU, but I believe a deal was made prior to the finals.
