This is very sad to hear. I went there a couple of times this year to test and tune with the Vette and the Caddy and Duke one of the tech inspectors remembered me when I last raced there in 1975 with our big block '69 Camaro SS. Small world. BTW Duke has been working there since 1966. The track itself opened in 1962. Don Garlits broke the 200 MPH barrier there in 1964. A lot of drag racing history. Let's hope it is not true.
Rumor has it there is a "tax" issue and some kind of EPA issue? I feel bad for the owners, they were probably trying everything they could to hang on through this bad economy. Which if you believe the propaganda in the so called media the economy is supposedly in a "state of recovery"? TSab say, they are in a "State of Denial".
One thing they might try to do is try to contact Humpy Wheeler owner of Lowes Motor Speedway and Zmax (or anybody involved with racing / motorsports) and see if they would be interested in buying the facillity. They have wanted a track in the NE back a while ago, here's an opportunity, possibly on the cheap. Just saying.
Well, I may have to dust off the old racing gear and get back into it again before another goes down.
Looks like a good retirement job for Bobby.... Track owner!
Let's do this!
I did hear a rumor a few years back that the place was possibly for sale for around a little over a million dollars or something (I don't think it included ALL of the surrounding land that they currently own or even the 'other' hidden entrance to the track that not everyone knows about though?) which isn't all that much for a drag strip/parking lot/concession stand/equipment in NJ in my opinion.
A little multiple partnership deal maybe?

I really didn't want to do this publicly, but all my behind the scenes stuff has gone nowhere.
A TON of rumors are going around as to why it's closing for good. Some are in such denial that they swear it's going to open in late March as always. I'm finding myself in the middle. I'm not sure if they (track management) just want it to go away, or if they need help to get over the hump. Nobody seems to have that answer, and guessing at it will get nowhere. I happen to be in a great spot in that I can put the people that currently own the property in touch with somebody that is VERY interested in keeping the Island tradition and history alive, or make a run at winning it at the tax auction if it goes that far.
From my FB page...
If any of my friends know how/where to get in touch with any of Island Dragways management, or what township/government official I need to talk to, please let me know. It doesn't need to die, and we may be able to save it. Investors and business plan are already lined up and ready to roll. We are NOT scared of the EPA, the Feds, or the boogie man. Let me know what it'll take. Please.
