no, shouldnt it be able to do it dry also? Ive done a few dry ones before, but now the front tires wont hold? Is my timing retarded or something maybe?

I had a problem once in a while like this in my five speed 'stang. Line Loc solved the problem. I've never had trouble heating the tires(Both DR's and Slicks) after a quick WHIP through the water. Try that and see if it helps. It'll insure they're wet(enough) which might allow the car to heat them the way they should be. If you're to do this regularly...install a line loc.

Install a line lock. This will insure a good burnout and prevent breaking parts with a poor burnout. By the way, change to a 700r4 and 3.73 rear. My 80 vette with a ZZ4 runs 12.80 with a 168 60 foot time. Keep racing.
