Some people say they shift through the 1, 2, 3 and then D gears to get a few hundred more RPMs....... is this safe to do with a automatic and would it hurt my engine? (I have a Buick Regal)

I think your on the wrong forum. ;)
What year Regal do you have, maybe I can point you in the right direction?
If it has an engine, it's been "rodded". The more bizzare the set up the more the die hard will want to make it work. That's why I'm still screwing with a Crossfire. Those GN's and other turbo Buicks have been the reciepient of much attention. Enjoy your car!

To answer your questioin.... every set-up is different from the next... hit the dragstrip and figure out which way your set-up likes.
I also have a 99 Regal like him. I played around with shift points for a little while and found it was best to just leave it in 3. Unless you have a lot of mods, it's useless to wind out the gears, you'll just run slower.
