We tested my new set up again today at Orlando Speed World....it was incredibly hot and humid...at noon it was 94* with 91% humidity...ugh...track temp was 152* by 2 PM...
Anyway, we checked TDC and the timing first...turns out the tab on the balancer had gotten bent and screwed up the timing...we thought we had 38.5 * of total timing and it was actually 32*...yipers!...
We fixed that and took a pass...the car picked up some to 7.19 but that is not nearly enough...next we put a borrowed 1000 cfm carb on in place of my 830 cfm...
The next pass was 7.09, it picked up a full tenth...we're getting there...it rained twice on us so we only got two passes from 10 AM to 5 PM...
I hope to pick up a 950 cfm carb this week which we will put on the car next Friday at the test n tune...we will play with the jetting, timing and fuel pressure to get it even closer...should be running 7.0 to 6.90's in this heat...I have no doubt my motor guy will get it there...
FWIW, my wheels are up about 8 inches at launch...not bad since I launch at 3780 lbs....thanks to Glensgages and my friend Bud for helping swap the carbs twice...it was 96* and 94% humidity by 4:30 today...
The Holley 950 HP is a great all around carb. A buddy of mine has one as a spare and whenever we suspect a carb issue, he's the first one we call to borrow it. And from what he says, his carb has been on several different motors and has worked well. Another friend (Bud McNasby) who used to run the Atco speed shop told me the 950 HP was the only carb he kept in stock just because of how versatile it is.
I hear the same things about the Holley 950 HP...I like the new Ultra HP but the price is a bit stiff...$750 is the best I could find...we heard about a good used 950 HP for 400 bucks so we are looking into that for now...
The motor seems to be happy so I'm happy...on another note, my buddy tried the Smith Racecraft traction bars along with Strange single adjustable shocks...he runs a 69 Camaro with a 447 c.i. Shafaroff motor...makes about 625 at the crank...
He has been having to pull 18 degrees of timing at launch so as to not go up in smoke...he was running 7.02 in the 1/8 with 1.62 short times...he set the bars in the middle hole and the shocks at 5 clicks...
Talk about improvement!...he went 6.75 with a 1.50 short and 6.74 with a 1.48 short...wheels up about 16 inches...he bought these because they are way more adjustable than Caltracs...btw, he is a small tire car like me...
Today I picked up a 1050 HP carb that had exactly one run on it...turns out my motor guy had it on his consignment table but thought the owner told him it was an 850 cfm...the owner is a friend and gave me a money back warranty...it really is like new...
Looking forward to bolting it on come Friday night...woot!...
OK, we put on the new Quickfuel 1050 last night...the car would not run...sputtered, popped and banged...tried twice to no avail...we think the fuel line is the issue...to reach the new carb it sits dead on the valve cover and gets real hot...we are thinking vapor lock...
John and I will be installing a new longer braided line this morning to keep it off the motor...fingers crossed this will solve the issue...if not, it may be electronics...sigh...going back tonight for another test n tune...
Having issues here as well. After 94 passes this year, my max ported (read brittle) heads sprung a leak resulting in coolant spraying in the #1 cylinder. Got them patched and back on yesterday. Testing at MG tomorrow.
Best of luck with those heads, buddy...I ran again last night...I had a fair first pass of 7.12...then I had a lousy second pass popping and missing again, just like before...arghhhhhh....
All this after installing new braided line from the regulator to the new carb...I did happen to touch the new line and it was very hot after my second run...way to hot...hmmmmm...
I made a third run with the hood off and no air cleaner...WOW!...the car went right down broadway, shifted perfectly at 6400 and ran much cooler at 7.05...looks like vapor lock is the issue...this motor is making much more heat, apparently, which is cooking the fuel in the lines...
Today I am going to Lowe's to pick up some foam pipe insulation and cover all the fuel lines in the engine compartment...hopefully this will do the trick...
I am having just about all the fun one man can stand...lol...sigh....

Here is a pic of me launching last Saturday night...3750 lb. launch weight with my pump gas 465 motor...this was before I took off the hood and was a so-so pass...the DA was north of 3600...it was africa hot and brazil humid...track temp was 148*...
