Yesterday we pulled the diff cover and discovered the spacer bolts had all sheared off in the ring gear...all 12 of them...yipers!...for those who said spacers will not hold up to drag race applications....you were correct...now we had to get the broken pieces out of the ring gear with nothing to grab onto...they were ARP hardened steel with red locktite, btw...sheesh...
After over 2 hours of battle, 4 drill bits and busted knuckles we got them out...there was a reason for fighting this battle...I have a race on Thursday and the ring and pinion were both in great shape so we wanted to re-use them...
By saving the ring gear we then went to his speed shop and got a 4 series full spool that was on the consignment table...woot!...so for 100 bucks we were able to get rid of that goofy spacer and still use my 4:30 gears...everything went smoothly...the axles were a real tight fit but only because they were 33 spline from Moser while the spool was from Strange...
I left the shop ready to race at 6PM last night...I should be good to go off the foot or button now...yay!......Thursday we are off to SGMP in south Georgia for the index race...I hope to run the 7.0 class and may double in open comp as well...
It is nice for a change to repair something and end up better and stronger than before it broke....and...for a nice price I might add...I kept the almost new 3 series spool and spacer...ya never know....lol....
Thanks guys...I may leave off the button but I had planned to use last Saturday's event as practice with the brake...oh well...I may just footfeed the .500 pro tree at this point...we'll see...
The plans are going a bit awry....looks like a 70% chance on Friday...we don't want to sit around in the rain all day at the hotel...we will probably go up on Friday night and get one qual run Saturday morning then into elims...we would have gotten one run on Thursday evening and two on Friday...oh well...
