Need help with 60ft.
Right now I dont have squat for mods, but I have allot of plans. I just got my 3.75 Richmond gears and I wanted to know how they will affect my 60ft times. I am currently run between 1.939-1.949. My worst is 1.963 and my best is 1.936. This is with stock 3.07 gears. My ulitimate goal is to run as close to 12.0 as possible in the 1/4. Can I reach that with my current mods and what I have planned?
Since your a 96 LT1, your car is an auto and I can tell you right now that if you want to improve your 60, ET and trap speed, get a converter. How are you launching now, are you heating the nitto's to where the car is covered in smoke, or justs spinning them to get them wet? They have to be VERY hot to hook. Although you are getting a decent 60 foot for street tires, I see no reason why you cant get a 1.90 or better on drag radials, especially since you have gear now. :D

Re: Need help with 60ft. (Bravery)
Sorry, I forgot to mention that the 60ft times were not on the NITTO's, they were on SZ50's. Which converter would you recommend? I have been looking at a 2400.
I have been shopping for a month or so now trying to find a converter for my application. If you are staying stock, go with (at max) a vigilante 2800 or a yank torque thruster 2800 (2.5). You can go less but I would not go more than that on a stock LT1. If you are going to be doing the heads and cam soon, then have your specs ready (cam profile) when you call the manufacturer.
I am leaning towards the yank 3000 torque thruster (3.0) as my heads/cam package is for more topend power and I need the low end brought back as I wont have that much afterwards.
At any rate, expect to spend $500+ on a good converter. As for improving your 60 foot right now.... remove weight from the car, dont run less than 25psi in the tires (since they are street tires) and practice different launch rpm's.
I go to the track on sunday, hopefully I can get into the 13's as it will be my first time running this car at the track.

I only have a D36 rear end. Will it be able to stand that much stress? Thanks for the help. Good luck at the track. What type of Vette do you have?
That is a mixed opinion. I have seen the Dana 36 take quite a beating, but on the other hand, ive seen ones that blow up their first time out. I have a friend who had a 383 with a 150 shot and his rear lived a season. I wont be making that much power nor will I be spraying so yes, it will live. I am certain your car will have the same luck, but one can never tell.
I have a 55k mile 95 auto that is 100% stock right now. At my house I have the TPIS long tubes, HPP3 and thermostat, along with a tranny cooler. Nothing has been put on the car as I want to baseline it first to see what, if any, problems arise and how much power its making. I will also weigh the car to get a more accurate prediction of my hp level right now.
3.73s, good 2800-3000 converter with good tires and you should be seeing low 1.7x shorts and 1.6s after mods. The d36 is hit or miss. might last a while, might not. The 3.73s put additional stain on it as well, but i've seen Mackey make 100s of passes on a 3.73 d36, but i've also seen lots that didn't make it. good luck

You should have no problem reaching your goals. Take a look at John Panuzzo and John Mackey's cars (both are red 1996 LT1's). Panuzzo's car is essentially stock with gears, 2800 stall converter, and 1.6 rockers he has gone as quick as 12.26 in the good e-town air using drag radials.
Mackey's car was setup similar and went a 12.43. Mackey has since installed a Cartek heads cam and intake package and has gone as quick as an 11.5.
Look these guys up they both represent where you are now and where you want to be in the future.
With my new tranny ready for install I had quite a bit of reservation about my d36 lasting too. I spoke with the guys here and also with Dana at Pro-built. Here is basically what he said:
The rear in my car has a much better chance of survival with the new tranny+my vigilante TC.
I was shocked by this statement. I thought a more efficient tranny and TC would surely transfer more stresses to the rear, ultimately causing it to gernade.
He said :nono: Here is the reason he gave. When the stock converter is used with a modded engine or stock, the larger converter causes much more shock between shifts. This is mainly due to the size difference+design differences in a *good* converter rather than a stock one.
I said boy I never would have thought that. His reply was he will bet every time that the stock equipment in the drivetrain will cause failure of the rear way before good aftermarket equipment.
Now don't go shooting the messenger. It was contrary to what I would have thought as well, but I would have to say he has much more experience in drivetrains that I do.
