what kind of horsepower and torque can be safely put through a 94 ZF6 drivetrain? im thinking of a stroker with juice, but im wondering if the tranny or rear end will take it? thanks guys.....
The transmission can handle alot, the rearend is a Dana 44 and can handle plenty, but your clutch, tires, halfshafts, driveshaft and suspension are a different story. :-) In my guesstimation, I would have to say the stock setup can hold an 11 second car, but once you get LOW 11's, be prepared for something to give....
Rich S has put some power through His GS-ZF6 and D44. He just re-did the 44 and drives it HARD with DR's at the strip. He's making gobs of power too(over 360RW). Seems to be holding up fine for Him.
My 350 was at 360RWHP/360Torque and held up with three years of drag racing, ET streets and 4000 RPM clutch dumps. Would recommend beefed up ujoints and spindles. My 396 is close to 400RWHP/420Torque and would be over the edge with ET streets and 4000 RPM clutch dumps.
If I were in your position, I'd replace the halfshafts and U-Joints. The halfshafts are something that you should watch out for. Those things will do some damage if they break. If you're not gonna replace them, atleast draw lines on them with a magic marker or something. Then you'll be able to monitor if they're twisting or not.
The ZF can take it the clutch can't, go with a centerforce. The 44 can also take it, but change the half shafts and drive shaft. add a set of drag radials and your good to go. Just look at the sledgehammer 880 hp. I run a big block C4 with gobs of power and no problem. Also a good set of strong wheels (ever see a wheel rip apart??)
