Default My first ever automatic, Help me launch this L98...

I have an 89 convertible, pretty stock ~270hp at the crank, a 700R4 with stock TC and a 2.59. It's pretty respectable, but I am curious on the best way to launch this set up for good 60' times. Do I need to powerbrake and if so what rpm do I set at before I take off. Also, what is the best way (outside of major engine mods) to get the 60' mrk down? I have seen many L98's in the high 1 second mark. Can I get there without too much cost?

I just started racing this year with an automatic. With the stock torque converter and 2.59 gears, I would just punch it from idle and go.

Now that I have a high stall TC and 3.45 gears, I bring it up to about 1200 rpm and hit it.

With the 2.59 gears I had a best of 1.95 60' time.(LT1)

I have the same motor, trans, and rear that you have and judging by your hp, I have very similar mods to you. Before purchasing drag radials the best '60 time I could put down was 2.01, but they averaged about 2.1x. I have only been to the track once since putting the drag radials on and I made three runs and all three were 1.95s. I achieved this by power braking to about 1200 RPM and then nailing it on the last yellow. I did heat the tires up pretty good with decent burnouts on all three runs and ran about 20 lbs. in the tires. Hope this helps.

I have an 85' with an L98, and I power brake it, get the RPM's up to 1700, and on the last yellow I let it rip. I usually have 1.90 sixty foot times. Today I had a 1.88

At the CCC on Saturday in Etown, what best seemed to work for me was to launch around 1200rpm and floor on the last yellow. Got 1.889 60' with that. If I powerbrake to 2000, I get wheelspin and 2.0x 60' times, but higher trap speeds at the end of the 1/4.. I too have an '85 L98 but with the intake work, I'm down a bit on off-the-line tourque I think..
I'll be playing with launching techniques at LVD in Oct..
