Default 26" or 28" Tires with 3.42 gears

My car is a 2002 A4, just trying to find the best combo for the 1/4 mile. Would the 26" tires bring more gear out in the rpms than the 28''s. Thoughts

Depends on your mods. Unless you are making 800+ hp, then you are probably best with 26" tires.

I vote 26".

There are lots of threads discussing this topic.

As the other poster mentioned, unless you're pushing 800+, the 26" would be the best choice.

I used to drag race my C5 on a regular basis, by best time was 10.98, I was using 26 inch tall M&H slicks on 16 inch wheels. The tires were 11 inches wide. My 60 ft times were between 1.48 and 1.50. The 28's will give you a slightly larger contact patch but not much. However you have to be careful about tire growth, (normal behavior for a true slick.) because if you get enough tire growth on the top end the tires can expand (they get taller) into the fender well and get cut. You don't want to lose a tire on the top end of the track.

Understand, concerns about tire growth depend upon the type of tire you run.

I run 3.73 gears and an A4 with a 3600 stall converter but even so I prefer the 26 inch tall tires. It lowers the effective final drive a little. I never get out of 3rd gear with an A4 so, from a gear ratio standpoint why run 28 inch tires?

I feel that because we are limited as to tire diameter compared to the 33 inch tires other cars often run that for us when it comes to tire patch and grip wider works better than taller.

I hope this information helps you make the right decision for your car.
