Default Perfect reaction time or so I thought

I thought a perfect R/T was .500?

Back in July I took my car to the track (first time to the track in over 15yrs.) and the guy next to me seemed to leave early but there was no red light and the green never came on on his side. I was confused and my win light didn't come on until after I crossed the line (I beat him to the line too). His R/T was .014.?
I am confused. I tried doing research and still found .500 was perfect but I also saw people on youtube cutting lights trying to get what they called a perfect R/T of .000
It sounds stupid but what is it? If you don't get a red light for sub .500 is .500 really a perfect R/T or is that giving someone a good jump start?

Just depends on the timing system , I believe the .5 is in reference to a 5/10ths vs a 4/10ths so a perfect light can be .000 or .500

A .500 was a perfect light back in the day...the timing systems now go off of a .000 for perfect...for instance if you had a .014 light that would be equal to a .514 back in the day and so on...there are just a very few tracks left with the old .500 tree...I cannot recall the last time I ran at one of those...

BTW, if you wait for the green you will be horribly late...you need to leave as soon as you see the third amber...

If you had a .500 light, the light was green as you were launching (.500 seconds between the last Amber and green). A perfect light has been .000 for a decade or two.

Thank you. Yes I would leave on the third amber so by the time I did my thing and the car did its thing I would cross the beams between .500 and .53x usually .51x which was good back in the day.
It looked like the guy next to me left on the second amber and got a .014. It would have been nice to know. The ET is good but I also like to have a good RT also. The last time I race he would have got a red light.
Thanks
I will have to ask the track next time.

The time between the lights is still the same only the way they reported RT has changed. If you were getting .500-.530 on the old system hitting the tree the same way today will be reported as .000 - .030. Its still .500 between the 3rd amber and green,
