Does a coverter make a difference . Looking to get hooked up in new jersey. Type- price-place that does it. Thanks  Want to bring my 1/4 mile down
converter makes a big difference. You can have it done at many shops in NJ. Im not sure, but i think ECS, Vette doctors and Cartek would do it. and Im sure any tranny shop would do it for you too.
where to get it done is a much easier decision than which converter to get.
Yank, Pro Torque, Vigilante and other make converters.
They are usually made to your specifications as the converter needs to know what the powerband is like.
You have to decide what stall to get. Anywhere fro 2400 to 4400. The higher the number the looser the converter (feels like tranny is slipping)
Then you need to decide what Stall Torque Ratio you want. Anywher from like 1.7 to like 2.9. The bigger the number the harder the car will hit when you smash the gas.
Price ranges from about $700 new to about $1,500.
Have you been in a car with a higher stall converter?
TC needs to be matched to the Cam in the engine and the gears out back in the rear. I would suggest at a minimum when you do the TC upgrade your rear gear to atleast a 3.42 or 3.73. then go for the cam.
It is best to lay out a long term plan first with a reputable tuner and chart a course.
Where in NJ are you? Try the Vette Doctor's(NY) or ECS(NJ). I have a lot of C4 and C5 upgrade experience with the Vette Doctors and highly recommend them. I also know one of the owners (Chris) of East Coast Supercharging very well and know he will treat you real well! Cartek is also a supporting vendor of the Corvetteforum and is located in NJ.
and also what Edgar said, it's easier to find a shop to do it rather than pick out what you want.
Better yet, post in C4 Tech and ask what others with a similar setup are using.
I pretty much copied Mackey and Panuzzo's setup and I'm satisfied, but what worked for me won't necessarily work for you.

Torque Converter Fact & Function
First, you need to understand the functions of a torque converter. One of the jobs of the converter is to act as a fluid coupling from the motor to the transmission. Another, and a very important function, is torque multiplication. What remains is stall speed, a very misunderstood term. Stall speed is directly related to the amount of torque your engine produces (the greater torque, the higher the stall speed). For example, a converter with a 2800 to 3200 rpm rating might provide approx. 3200 rpm of stall speed behind the big block making 500-plus lbs of torque and in a small block with less torque it's possible to only have a stall speed of 2800. Without knowing how much torque your engine produces, you cannot know how much stall speed a converter is capable of.
Important Factors That Affect A Converters Stall Speed
Vehicle Weight
Vane/Fin Angle
Horsepower
Impeller to Turbine Clearance
Powerband/CamShaft
Stator Design
Torque Rate
Converter Diameter
Gear Ratio
These can be some of the biggest questions you have when looking for a converter. The best solution to any of your questions is to speak with a qualified technician at a high quality company.
