I deep-stage. That makes things REALLY interesting! If I let the other guy turn on his top bulb before I turn on my 2nd bulb, I'm screwed! Do you know how many times the Tree is fired before I got-in 'deep'? Track Personnel not paying attention have 'forced' me to run in this manner; start my burnout early, roll to the line, knock-out the top bulb, then creep-in & take out the bottom bulb, before my opponent pre-stages. Once he turns out the top bulb, I finish deep-staging. I have whoever is with me walk up & tell the starter "HE DEEP-STAGES!!!", but I still get the Tree fired before I'm ready unless I stage as above. If I know before a run just 'who' I'm running, I or my help 'tells' the opponent my routine, and explains I'm NOT being a jerk-off...Anybody got any solution to THIS problem???
There is no formal policy to allow for deep staging. If you deep stage, do so at your own risk.
As long as I see "deep" on my opponent, I will normally allow them to stage first. Sometimes I then take 14 of my 15 seconds to stage, sometimes I follow them in, once in awhile I will go and light both bulbs just to keep people honest. I am only concerned with my staging practice.
I need to stage the same way every time for the same rollout and so I can leave at the same spot on the tree and so I have a better chance of running what I dial.
Courtesy staging is what I do. Sometimes I get feisty waiting for an 18.5 second 1990 Lincoln to deep stage, but usually I am mellow and don't care.
Make sure you've got DEEP written on the car big enough for the starter to read, or just tell a track offical to tell the starter your a DEEP stager.
I have 'DEEP' in White, 6" letters (block-letters from a sign shop; not some 'shoe polish' scribling!) on ALL FOUR windows, AND I tell the Staging Lane Director AND the Starter, and they STILL 'fire' the Tree! If my opponent 'goes in' first, most times the Tree is fired before I get in deep. THAT is why I do quick burn-outs & roll to the Tree; I'm probably 'deep' before my opponent is 'staged' 19 out of every 20 runs this way. If my opponent lets me go 'deep' 1st, I don't mind if he tries to 'burn' me down; I'll just 'sit' on the converter. Since I'm usually the slower car (my Z28 runs 12.90s/13.00s), I almost HAVE to be ready to go.....
Even if you have DEEP on the car...you are burdend to bump in to your deep stage as soon as the other driver stages....and the auto start is on by that time, so there is no fix....just do it quickly!! Also, the courtesy stage is taken very serious at some tracks and you may be warned. We are not round track guy's here....we show respect for each other & the courtesy stage is part of it. Good Luck!
I usually tell the other guy I DEEP satge, so he knows when I have both lights lit I still have to go in deeper...& I also tell the starter as I go past him..
Now that the other Racer knows I go in deep, I just light both sets, & when he lights the Pre Stage... I go in Deep..
Usually prestage and wait for the other to prestage, then you can stage or let him stage. Some guys like to play around, sone guys just take longer because they are looking for their "spot"
We had a situation last year where a guy(C5-for identity purposes) prestaged and staged while the other guy(C4 again for identification) was still doing his burnout.
Now the C4 prestages, and with his loose converter it takes him a while to bump in to stage. While he was doing that, his light went red and teh C5 took off on the green.
It all came down to that autostart.
But had the C5 waited, that wouldn't have happened and he probably would have lost, so was he playing dumb or was he being slick? We will never know.
Probably would've lost, huh? I heard the C5 guy had done pretty well in the past. ;)
Hey Bill :seeya Lenny is a fine racer, but so are you.
I was just pissed that day because you beat me in the first round and beat Panuzzo in the second round, so we were hoping Lenny would take you out!
I guess that day it was yours, you killed 3 C4's in a row!
Hey Frank! :seeya I was pissed as well, I defiantely didn't want to beat Lenny that way ... and I've used proper staging etiquette ever since. :yesnod:
Its all head games anyway...........I just race my race...
They enforce the 15 second rule locally.
I just want them to stop breaking as we stage!
A couple of years ago our local SL officials let 2 break in a row next to me before they let me go
Do you think my car was hot........... :cuss
Whats the rules next week :jester

Here at my drag strip, when I go to Test & Tune sessions, it's not an Auto Start, the guy hit's the button to start the tree once both cars have lit the STAGED light. The thing that pisses me off most, is when a punk kid in a rice rocket rolls up, but doesn't light the prestage light! :mad There's SO many freakin ricers that do this, it's like, why bother even having a christmas tree! The stupid kids have to be started by HAND! I usually hang back and when I see one of these fools doing this, I'll go in and light the PRESTAGE light, and see if they get the hint..if not..I'll just get up on the converter and then light the STAGED and show them my tailights. Usually though, it's always sit on prestage until the other person gets up to prestage, from there it's GO TIME!
