I copied the following new rule from the NHRA web page..
A quick guess, I bet the "Ricers" are the reason this rule was imposed.. :D
NHRA Tech issues ruling on specialty wheels
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7/31/2003
On the streets, a growing fad has been the installation of designer wheels, and from that the NHRA Technical Services department has received numerous calls concerning the use of some of these designs on race vehicles.
Following is the NHRA technical departments ruling on this matter: "Effective immediately, the use of any spinner-style wheel or any wheel design that incorporates movable parts within the structure of the wheel while the vehicle is in motion are prohibited at all levels of NHRA competition."
NHRA Senior Technical Communications Specialist John Miller added, "This wheel might look great on the street, but as a technical group we feel these designs raise many safety concerns when they are used in competition, leading to the decision."
I have seen those wheels.... they have an inside piece that spins freely, so when the vehicle is stopped the wheel continues to spin, which gives the appearance that the car's wheels are still turning. I have seen them mostly on giant SUVs, Navigators and such. I wouldn't be surprised to see these wheels outlawed for street use. Why? Because average Joe motorist can get a bit spooked if he sees wheels moving on a car and thinks it might be about to move... could cause an accident. MJ
The Lexus has $15,000 damage & they are still counting :( ..they will have the appraiser take another look Monday after they get the front end apart ..to look for hidden damage :(
I've already made up my mind to get rid of it if they dont total it.. I wont feel comfortable having a car that took a hard hit like that,, ??
Will look at a 2003 GS430 :D
Anyone know if that make 3500 converters for a Lexus GS430 :D
I have to commend NHRA for a rule like that. On the outside, it could break loose and be a missile on the track (or streets). On the inside, it could play havoc with brake lines and other vital components.

Re: New NHRA Rule (Beach Bum)
Here in Socal, those stupid butt things are becoming common site.... why do people want to draw attention to themselves in this manner is a mystery.
Good for the NHRA !!!
cheers,
Beach Bum
Beach - come on, you know the answer to this one - these ricer guys want the same kind of attention that pimps want - oh wait, sorry. Some of these guys ARE pimps! :D  :lolg:

Re: New NHRA Rule (Red96Coupe)
Rumor has it that NHRA found out that stock racer standouts Woodro Josey and Al Corda both did some testing with these type of wheel on the LS1 powered Firebirds and they both showed tremendous performance gains.
It appears that the spinning gyroscopic effect of the outter wheel on the unsprung weight of the total mass of the wheel tire combination had a perpetual inertia velocity that was good for .3 gain in ET just by installing these wheels.
Again with NHRA it had nothing to do with safety but who had the marketing rights to these new wheels. ;)

Speaking of too much time on their hands...
With the "gyroscopic effect" producing all that "perpetual inertia velocity", wouldn't that negitively affect the breakout preventing braking at the top end? Maybe we ought to let those "sandbaggers" keep 'em.

JCaire, you know, you have an interesting idea there,
how about some sort of spinning flywheel that is spooled up to say 5000 rpm or so on each wheel, and then applying an electric brake to instantly engage when the hammer is dropped???
