I have a question for you John.... I would like to cool things down at the track but, counting my drive time to the track, the first time I'd be putting this on the car would be about 5 1/2 hours of thaw time for it.... if I go 5 rounds that adds another 3 hours or so....will this cooler stay frozen that long especially since I'll be placing it on a hot engine ?
Half the racing season in Texas is when the temp's are 95+. Putting in the manual fan switch and using the racing cooler keeps my temp's at around 175.Takes about a half hour after arriving at the track to get the temp down from 200 to 170 with the fans running in the pits. Put on the cooler right before time trials begin. Keep a spare in the ice chest.
I get to the track 2 hr before 1st time trial... I have a manual fan switch, & can get it down to 140 deg before my 1st run..
I have 3 "Racing Cooler" frozen gel refill bags.. I put on one, in the fire-proof bag, & its good for 2+ hr.. I leave it on during the run, .. & run the fan in the pits..
I always make it through the day with 3 gel bags, & my temp never goes over 170 even in round robin..
On VERY HOT days, I'll help the Racing Cooler" by using a bug sprayer filled with water, & spray the radiator, & exhaust manifolds, as they hold a lot of heat..
Bottom line.. Racing Cooler WILL help keep your temp in the "Zone" & thats what you need to be consistent!!
Dan, as long as you have two or three inserts(as us Red guys have), you just rotate the gel packs between rounds and they will last all day. It's when you put it on and leave it on that they will thaw quicker.
I have better results if I leave ONE frozen insert in the bag, & leave it in until its totally soft..
I find that if its frozen HARD it doesn't transfer the "Cooling" effect, or absorb the heat as well .. I think if its just a little soft, (after its been on a hot intake for 20 min) it will be semi soft, & transfer the cold better than a VERY HARD frozen insert..
Same as a bag of ice.. when its hard it dont transfer the cold as well as if it were a bag of 1/4 water & 3/4 ice... the cold water absorbs the heat from the intake faster & better than a HARD block of ice..
Even at this in 90+ weather I get a full days use with 3 bags.. as I said before its a great product, but if you can help it with a sprayer, or a manual fan it will work better.. :)
I'd suggest you try Franks way, then try it like I do.. or if you can think of your own way, try it & see what works best for YOU... :)
Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I only have two inserts, I use one for time shots and the other for elims. My temps range from 195-197 when I leave the line. My times are also more consistant when using the bags. Great product Wendy. :yesnod:
Actually JP, I have 4 inserts, 3 hard ones and one soft(the original) I will slide the soft in with a hard one and rotate the hard ones. I've had the best luck this way. My temps usually end up in the 160-1170 range when I'm at the starting line.
