The more modded the car is the more likely it helps.
On a basically stock/lightly modded car it does not make much of a difference, at least not one that I was able to measure with all the other variables.
As for ruining the suspension, it does not do that. I have it removed on my car for a year and a half now. You will only miss it with spirited (high speed turns) driving. Regular street driving hard to tell the difference.

I agree that it doesn't ruin the handling, but once you put it back in, it's hard to take back off again.
