Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (1fastmfc5)
Unless your shift points aren't set correctly, I can see no reason to shift manually...the computer never makes a mistake and it can shift a lot quicker than we can...
Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (Fuzzy Dice)
I have a 96 that is electronically shifted, I can set the shift points & leave it in D However if you dont have an electronically shifted trans...i.e. 93 then most people I know use a shift light..
Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (1fastmfc5)
I shift mine. I got in the habit when the old trans shifted to 2nd at 3400 rpms. I haven't tried letting it shift itself since I got a new trans, two years ago. If the auto shift points are appropriate, being lazy is more consistant.
Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (mackeyred96)
I'm not good enough to shift mine, the computor is faster.
With an auto I dont think you "HAVE" to be fast... just look at the tach & push it to next gear when it hits your shift RPM.. I only think you have to be FAST & coordinated is on a 6 speed!
I don't think an electronic auto can shift ant faster than "ANY" human as long as he/she can look at the tack & push the shift lever when the rpm hits the shift point.. OR put in a shift light....duhhhh & push the handle when you see the light...
"IF" you are really slooooooooooooo.. set the shift light to go off 200-400 RPM BEFORE you want to shift...
Common John ..you knew that.... You dont have to be "FAST" to shift an auto...
Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (eschoendorff)
I have a 93...my tranny shifts at 5900 rpm, wide open throttle ...with 3:73 gears that puts me through the traps at 5900 rpm...just at red line...only perfect...I had my tranny rebuilt and beefed up last fall and it shifts lightening fast...
The red line on a stock 93 is right at 5900 rpm or so...you need to put it in 3rd (regular D) and see what rpm you are shifting at under WOT...also what rpm you go through the finish line at...if you are shifting too soon then you may want to try manual shifting..
If your 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are at or near redline with the computer doing the shifting, your fine...I don't know what gear ratio you have in your car but if it is less than 3:73 you will go through the traps at a lower rpm...since my swap to a Dana 44 with 3:45's I am going through the traps at a measley 4800 rpm...tomorrow morning my car goes in the shop to have new 3:73's put in like I had in my old Dana 36....I'm tired of lollygagging along in 3rd gear at WOT...

I'm not positive about the 4L60E, I think it would apply to the "E" also, but the 700R4/4L60 shifts with the same quickness at WOT, regardless of whether the next gear is manually selected of if the trans decides the shift point. Being "good" is not a factor in a "fast shift".

RACE ON!!!
On a 4L60E shifting done by the computer, however on earlier models the computer has nothing to do with the shift point, & its hit or miss thats why in NON computer trannys it might be better to manually shift, in computer controlled cars let the comp do it. it DOES NOT SHIFT QUICKER THAN A HUMAN! only more consistent!

I'm sure my non "E" is more consistant than *I* am. We agree, then, that the "quickness" of the shift is not a factor in auto or manually selected shift points on an A4.
Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (MC TORCH RED)
leave it in 3rd and hang on, you can't outshift the brain in your car.....
What about those guys who "DONT" have a "BRAIN" (computer controlled) trans ?? You & I have "Brains" i.e Computers) that control the shift, but older Vettes are shifted by valve bodies (mechanical) and may not shift at the optimal shift point... (most dont shift at the correct RPM)
Tracy Lewis's daughter drives a 7 sec dragster with all the latest Hi Tec. Electronics Delay box, trans break, etc...
Lets see if that is shifted by a computer "Brain" or a Teenage girl
Re: anyone manually shift their a4 while racing? (Fuzzy Dice)
Hey John...when your finished asking Emily if she shifts her dragster ask if she shifts the C5 when she drag races...
We KNOW SHE DONT SHIFT THE C5 its a Computer controlled car..I'm trying to make a point to the others who have computer control shifts who say "Let the Computer Shift" I agree but what about those who do NOT have computer controlled trannies?
Sure some shift at or close to the red line ..but what about those whose valve bodies are not set correct, & the car is shifting at 4200... do you spend $$ and have a tranny shop screw with it 4-6 hrs.. or just shift when the shift light flashes at 6000... I vote for a $40 shift light...
