Default Borg Warner T-10 4 spd

I'm looking at buying a used T-10, but I'm not sure what to look for to set one tranny's condition better than another.

I looked at one last night which had all it's bearings replaced in spring 2001. Then it sat for three years in a car that was never driven. The guy sold the car without the tranny but let the car buyer use the tranny to drive the car home. So the tranny has about 20 miles on the new bearings. Then it sat for another year.

The gears and syncros were said to be in excellent shape when the bearings were replaced. There is a small amount of play in the input shaft, is this play ok?

Should be no play in input shaft sure your not talking about the the other end, it is OK for some play there ( tailshaft )

Hard to determine if it good or bad by lookig at it, you have to try it and see how it works basically, stay away from it if the input shaft( part the goes in the clutch ) is loose.

Default input shaft play

The play in the input shaft measures 0.040" at the tip.

What would cause this play? Could the old worn bearings have ground down the input shaft? He did say the tranny would howl before the bearing replacement. If so replacing the input shaft would probably fix this, no?

Is that play in and out, or sideways? The ball bearing on the input shaft at the case doesn't and won't control sideways deflection of the input shaft. But the pilot bearing will.

The play is sideways not in and out. The bearing I'm thinking about, the input bearing, is outside of the case but behind a shield at the front of the case. So then when the tranny is out of the car that small play sideways is acceptable as the pilot bearing in the engine will hold it in place?

Yes. But that bearing really isn't outside of the case. The input shaft pushes into and rides on the inner race of the ball bearing. The outer race of the ball bearing fits in the bore in the front of the case. All you are describing is a wobble, or deflection, at the end of the input shaft, that the pilot bearing/bushing won't allow when the trans is in the car. A new hearing would have that kind of play.
