Shortblock storage and cleaning
I just purchased a brand new ZZ4 shortblock which has been sitting for 4 years. No rust has developed but it's collected a fair amount of dirt and grime in the cylinders, lifter galley, etc. My question is what is the best way to clean this engine out? I was thinking about putting it on a engine stand and spraying it down with WD-40? Also, what would be the best rust inhibitor to apply to the bare metal surfaces like the cylinder walls and decks for further storage? I appreciate any advise.

I'd blow and wipe it down as best you can, and coat the bores and the deck with engine oil. Then wrap it up, air tight, in plastic. When you're ready to assemble and use it, *I* would tear it down and take it to the car wash. There are probably better ways, but that is what first occurs to me.
