Hello everyone, been a while since I last posted but still working on my 70 coupe and need some BBC advice. This is what I have so far: 70 LS5 coupe, keisler tko 600 w/.64 OD, totally rebuilt rear with new Eaton carrier and 3.70 gears, complete VBP performance plus supension kit, offset trailing arms, all new brakes and I also have a new Dewitts rad with twin Spals. My original plan was to buy or build a 540 monster but the 12k I had for the engine I sorta spent on a new Yamaha FJR1300.....oops. So now I am going to build the original #matching engine, which is probably the way to go since I dont think my drive train could handle that much torque. The block is .030 and I already have TRW L2465F pistons they are 10.0 with a 118ccc chamber. I have cam it is Edelbrock RPM hyd roller .625I .639E 236I 245E on 112 center I plan to run the Air Gap intake, I have not decided on oval or rect ports so dont have the intake yet. So back to the original question what would be the best head and chamber size with what I have so far? I am looking at AFR 305 and 325 also GMPP rect and oval ports which are the same as edelbrocks except available with bigger 2.25 intake valves ..... I have 2k to spend on heads, So which ones? Thanks, Mike
Brodix has a new head out with 294cc runners that flows up to 348cfm, and EVERYTHING is in the standard location, no raised exhaust ports here. Sounds like the hot ticket for vette applications where header selection is limited.
I think they are brand new. Car Craft had them in this months issue in the new parts section.
One thing is for sure though, Brodies reputation is bulletproof. AFR's reputation pail's in comparison, lots of quality problems with their hardware, lots of waiting and they never beat their advertised flow numbers. Car Craft flowed their brodies and they beat the advertised numbers on the web site.
A lot of guys at www.teamchevelle.com are running the Brodix RaceRites. Team Chevelle has a performance forum in the tech section. It is probably the best BBC info forum on the net. The guys at Team Chevelle seem to favor the oval port heads with the CNC chamber option. The flow numbers of the oval port heads are very impressive. I'm considering a set for the 496 in my '65 Malibu, to replace the #781 heads I have which were cut for 2.19 and 1.88 valves.
The Edelbrock/GMPP aluminum heads are supposed to respond nicely to a port job, but out of the box, they flow slightly better than GM oval ports that have been cut for larger valves and ported. I believe the Edelbrock heads have 2.19/1.88 valves, whereas, the GMPP heads (made by Edelbrock) have 2.25/1.88 valves.
I think that the oval port heads are the best choice for a street driven engine, they make more power at a lower RPM than the Rectangular ports. So it all depends on what you want out of your car, if it's for race and high RPM's go with rectangulars, but given your engine specs I would recommend either edelbrocks or GM's alumnium oval ports.
Good luck with your decision.
Russ
Thanks for the advice Russ T ,but I have already ordered the Brodix Race Rite rectangle ports. They only have a 294cc intake so I should be okay. I like the idea of the exhaust ports being in the stock location since I am running Hooker side exhaust and think raised ports would cause probems. Thanks for all the suggestions, Mike
