Default How does this WhippleCharged setup sound...

A friend is thinking of building a 355sbc...here's what the build entails...
355sbc
-Stock Crank
-Powdered Metal 5.7 Rods
-Forged 8½:1 Blower Pistons
-Crane PowerMax 2032 Cam (214/220, .452/.465, 110LSA)
-Vortec Heads
-Whipple SuperCharger set to 12psi

He's hoping to make 500bhp...think it'll do it? We'd go MUCH bigger on the cam, but this engine has to be CARB E.O. SMOG LEGAL.

With 12 psi I bet he comes close.

think you'd be pushing the limits of the powdered rods? Seems like with that power output and a blower, you'd want to go with stronger aftermarket rods along with those forged pistons?

just a thought.

And the crank too, for that matter. 12 psi is going to put a lot of stress on these things. I don't have any experience with blower pistons but I'd think they'd have to be fairly heavy which doesn't help either with the load on those stock parts. Re/ the 500hp goal, are the heads worked any? I'm always interested in reading about FI projects. Considered it myself but decided to just stroke instead this time around.

Yeah, we're considering better rods. HE said he wanted better rods, but we told him PM rods are good to 500hp...but with a BOOSTED 500hp, you might be correct. I think the stock 4-bolt main crank will be fun.
Haha, this engine is going into a 90 Chevy 1500 Truck! I told him, with this combo, and traction, he should see low 12's.

You should be able to make it fairly easy. Their standard setup gets 518 from a ZZ04 at 10:1 comp. You would probably see even more increase in TQ if you can lower the compression to 8:1.

Hmm..I didn't know they had a ZZ4 setup..I'll have to look at that a bit more..doesn't the ZZ4 have Hyper pistons?
EDIT: Ohh wow! I just read that. wow, and the 518bhp was with only 7-8psi! We're going with a BIGGER cam, and MORE boost!

After talking with them, I think they had to limit their boost due to the high compression. To get more out of a SC engine, lower the compression - this allows a bigger charge to get in during each stroke. Also, watch the cam. Too radical and you defeat everything the SC is trying to provide. I'd have some long conversations with a cam specialist who knows SCs. I went with a fairly average cam so the car would behave decently on the street. Let the Whipple do the heavy lifting.
