Default 427 block sources?

Hi all,

My father is trying to decide if he wants to buy a new 427 block for his '67 Vette project or try to locate a good used one. This is a never-ending project it seems.

He already has pistons/crank/cam/timing gear set/rods that he was planning on using in a Mark IV block if that helps with choices at all.

What are some of the sources you guys are using for stuff these days that aren't insanely priced. I think we're just talking a good ole' iron block here, no aluminum.

Also, my brother is a GM employee so he can get parts at cost + 10% if any of you have GM part numbers for suitable blocks that GM carries.

Thank you!

Any 454 mark iv block will work, so if your lucky you might be able to find a few in the boneyard or someone parting out a 70's or 80's pickup with a 454.

454's and 427's share the same bore size so if he's planning on boring it out a bit for the new pistons you should be all set. And your more than likely find a 4 bolt main block if your looking around at motors from a 1 ton pickup.

At least from 1965 to 1988. The 4.25" 427/454 bore didn't appear until 1966. Too bad you're so far away, I have one from a 1973 Corvette, and one I built up from scratch, from new parts.

RACE ON!!!

Wow thanks for the offer (!), but he is about as concerned with originality as PETA is searching high and low for the perfect Kobe Beef recipie.

don't discount the aftermarket blocks. if he is going to get tricky with it they start being a comparative bargin before long. after i align bored and honed, machined for splayed main clamps, decked and bored 30 over. i was just about at the cost of an aftermarket block. if he just needs a 2 bolt 454 block they can be had pretty cheap.try almost any speed shop.
