Looks like I may break down and get a made to order kit, as finding a good 400 block seems near impossible these days. Here's where I'm at:
.030 over
0 deck
KB hypers with anti friction coating-flat top, 7 cc dish
5.7 rods w/ARP bolts
Scat cast crank (theyr'e only $200, why not)
I'm looking at around 1600+depending on where I go.

Still need:
-a retro fit roller, haven't decided on specs yet.
-Oil pan are they any different than a standard SBC? Windage tray?
-I'll use a regular 'ol double roller
-Heads probably AFR, may go Dart/Brodix-Guessing with a 76cc chamber i should be right around 10:1. Hopefully with an efficient combustion chamber and 0 deck I can use the hyper piston with no pinging.
-I'll be porting a spare TPI setup and taking that thing down 'til I have to buy epoxy
-I'd like your opinions on cam size. This HAS to pass CA. smog
-Guessing top engine speed will never be more than 5500 if that (maybe 5000-5200).
-I'm leaving the 3.07 gear;have a new Continental 2800 lockup converter sitting in the closet. Don't know if I should use it or not. Looking for a stealthy torque monster while keeping costs as low as I can.
Suggestions?

If you can't find a good 400 block, then what are you going to use for a block?

SOunds like I need to find a way to Utah!

Actually I had a few machine shops check with their core suppliers. One og them has four, but wont sell it unless i get the parts/machine work through them. I still think that if i were to get my own block and buy parts seperately i could do the shortblock for less.

Ron, this month's Chevy High Performance has an ad for Hye Tech machine in La Puente. They have some decent prices for 415 short block assemblies in $1400 range. They also have some decent prices on 391s, which could be made from a late model roller cam block, which would save some money on the cost of retro fit roller cam/lifters. Regarding oil pans, Competition Products has some good deals that include built-in windage trays that will clear a stroker crank; I think they run around $149. I will probably go with one of their pans if i can't get a GM six quart pan to clear the 3.75 crank in my 59 283 block. Wes
