Default 406 running hot

This is my first post, I need advice. Last year I put a 406 in my 79. Problem is it runs hot, around 220. I had the rad record. I have a stock water pump on the engine. Also, the heads have been drilled out. Any ideas?

Is your sensor on the heads or the intake? My 406 (66 Nova) ran 210* - 230* on the head (Dart II aluminum) and I never worried about it. It had an aluminum radiator, dual electric fans and an electric water pump.

I run a 180 thermostat with a factory stock cooling system in a 1970 LT1 370Hp an it never gets above 170 in all situations.

Either you've never let it warm up or your thermostat is stuck open. Never over 170° with a 180° stat??? It shouldn't run less than about 180°.

RACE ON!!!
