Default 396 engine...chime in please!!!

hy all..

im building a 396 for my 90 6 speed

what would you say to following:

396, based on a GMPP block, new ( and already at home)

Accel Single plane EFI Intake
210cc AFR Competition heads
plenum in "Jeb" style
Cam with about 236/240 .600 lift (not 100 %sure, but around this)

i run the combo through Destop dyno and yield very good streetable results, with lots of torque, also down low

i would prefer 195cc AFR heads, Comp.port, but the only support lift to .550....

also, want to go with a hydraulic roller cam....!!!! is 220lbs seat pressure to much for a hydraulic roller? (thats the springs, that come with the AFR 210´s)

maybe i should refer the book "How to build big inch chevy small block"
theres an 383 street motor, that build 480hp, with a mild cam and single plane efi......and AFR 210´s.........so i think they should be a good match for a 396...but again...

any Input would be nice

best regards

220lbs seat pressure to much for a hydraulic roller?

I'm no expert, but that sounds kind of high. I'm running 200/500 on a solid roller (250/254@.050, .660/.670 lift). It's been pounded into my thick skull that you want the least amount of spring pressure yet not have the valves float.

Id use the 195 heads with that much duration especiqally as you are mentioning low down torque. Dont expect a computer program to be accurate measuring low rpm torque on this sort of set up. 220lbs on the seat is too much pressure on a hyd roller cam, infact from what Ive seen hyd roller cams dont need a lot more pressure than a hyd flat tappet cam.
My 238 BBC hyd roller came recommended with as little as 120/300, though Im running a tad more. Another builder on this site running hyd roller cams with .720 lift used 160/380lbs
Springs are cheap, get the right ones.

AFR has 4-5 kinds of springs for each head. It just depends on what kind of cam your running.

396 motors are so much better than a 383. Crane makes a nice HR cam small BC of 232/238 112lc Then just use 1.65 or 1.7 rockers to get it up into the .600 lift.

Crower made my steel 1.65's and I should have just bought the 1.7's

210 cc is a minimum on performance heads. Since your going single plane and EFI. The 227 cc is the better choice
