Default Oil control problem

Yep, this dude is sucking down some dino-fluid. It usually doesn't smoke when I start it but if left to idle for a few minutes, it'll start spitting a thin blue cloud. If I get on it though, it'll always smoke. For instance, yesterday Grayhook came over and we did some car vids. When I started mine in the garage to warm it up, no smoke. After 2-3 minutes tho, it started belching the thin blue cloud.

I hope it's not the rings. With it smoking sporadically, I might get lucky on that. Heads? I did a cam swap last fall and had the heads totally rebuilt: new giudes, valves, springs, seals, studs, guideplates. So I don't think it's the heads. That leaves.....the intake. That is where this thread is leading. Grayhook brought his carb over for a jet change and to help me yank the intake. Now it's off and the jury is still out. Maybe you guys can help me out on this.

Click on my briefcase in my sig below, click on the Bretts74vette folder, then click on ultraflosound for smoky vids, and oilcontrol for head/intake pics.

Anyway, the pics show the intake ports on the heads and intake. The head ports LOOK clean but if you wipe the walls with a finger, it feels oily. Convincing evidence? I hope so. Also, in the passenger side head, the carbon buildup at the bottom of the EGR passage is wet looking, probably about 1/8 of an inch worth. More damning evidence? There's more. There's some wet, gooey-looking black crud on the top of each intake valve. The question is, did the oil that caused that come thru the guides or thru the intake port? Also, the gasket at the bottom of each port was wet with oil, as you will see when Yahoo is back up and I can link the pics. Any thoughts on the cause of this smoking problem will be appreciated.

Are you still using the PCV system? Mine pulls a lot of oil from the valve cover into the intake, creating a condition as you describe. I used a compressor filter as a separator and flow restrictor on the vacuum line. It has helped a lot. Good luck.

Yep, still have the pcv. Thing is, the intake runners are not all that oily, not nearly as oily as the head runners. I think reversion is the culprit in that regard.

Well, didn't work. Fired it up and no smoke until 5-10 minutes later and after it hit 150*. It wasn't as bad as before but I disgustedly shut it off at 180*. So, week after next I'll pop it again and use a FelPro 1210 set (contains 90323 side gaskets) and Permatex #2, OR, maybe an Edelbrock 7203 gasket....hmmm, which reminds me....I've had excellent luck with Earls header and collector seals. Do they make an intake set?
