some suggestions:
wire wheel on a bench grinder, for cleaning bolt threads.
spare set of exhaust manifold bolts (just in case they break).
I don't think cleaning the piston tops would be a good idea, some of the crude is bound to go between the piston and cyl straight to the rings.(just my opinion)

Uhh exhaust manifold bolts? I do hope your headers came in. Take it from me... if you put the pre-cats AND stock manifolds on..LOL the motor is going to feel just the way it is now. Those restrictive SOB's killed EASILY 100 HP on my car. I pray you're putting the headers on.
If there is a lot of funk on the piston tops, a toothbrush and a shop vac would be the way to go. I can help, but I have never taken apart an L98 before.
