Still trying to decide on the small (383,406,434) -vs- big (540,572) motor options for my car. I need to decide so I can get a bare block and setup the motor mount and trans mount locations this fall/winter.
I'm leaning toward the lighter weight with the "small" motors, but have started browsing the costs for aftermarket aluminum big blocks. The new blocks are still a little steep (about $4k), but I might go that way if I can find a decent used block. Anyone have one lerking in a dark corner of their garage?
The price for GM ZL-1 blocks is over $6k! Guess they plan on a lot of the "new" LS-6 motors?
I have to admit to ignorance on what the new LS-6 motors "really" are, and what parts it takes to build one. I'm still stuck in the "old" small blocks and Mk IV motor experience realm.
GregP,
You can get a good deal from a "sprint car" guy, BUT beware lots of those blocks have been fixed and may not leak "today" but "tomorrow" is another story!. Also Rodeck blocks are serial numbered do NOT buy an old one
as there have been a few "updates" ...redvetracr
No. But dropped an aluminum bow tie small block in our ‘69 and it went in like a glove. Even had the bosses factory tapped for the distributor shielding and the clutch. Pick it up for $2200 at a swap meet. However, if that is the car in you sig, I think you need big block torque to get those wheels to move. Go for the new ZL-1 block. I have heard that you can get it for less than list.
