I tried this in C5 tech,Maybe I'll try here.Did a H/C install,Make a long story short. It tries to run but backfires and pops out the exhaust but does not want to start.Has fuel, spark, and more than normal compression.I dialed in the cam, could I have did something wrong there?. 97 C5
Well, one likely scenario is the cam timing is off. When you said you "dialed in the cam", are saying you used a degree wheel to check the timing events?
When my son did his first cam install (an LS1) he mistook the dowel hole on the cam gear as the timing mark and lined that up with the timing mark on the crank gear. That actual timing mark out near the edge was kinda faint and would be easy to miss. That put his cam either 90 or 180 degress out (can't remember exactly), and gave some strange noises out the exhaust and in the intake when he tried to start it. Was fortunate not to bend any valves, pulled the timing cover and re-aligned and all was fine.
I did use a degree wheel.I checked a few things today,Tried to start,The pass.side headers were warm and the drivers side cold,So tomorrow I'll check out some more things.A few guys told me Its impossible to be 180 out because the crank turns twice for every one turn with cam
