Hedman Headers w/ Trick Flow heads. Need header gasket recommendation.
I used SCE copper gaskets but they do not seem to match the header ports very well so they leak.
Does anyone have any suggestions about which gasket that I could use to eliminate the leaks?
MIKER,
I have a suggestion! Cut your header flange (or in the case of Heddman hedders) it`s hedder flange, between the 1-3, 5-7, 4-4 and 6-8 tubes with a sawzall or hack saw ONE blade thickness will do the trick. You might be amazed how warped the flanges can get, and now they will seal MUCH better. I have Hooker race headers they were EXPENSIVE and are no longer made, this simple mod made ALL the difference. ..redvetracr
PS. I use the good Mr Gasket or Fel-pro stuff.
Miker,
On my Trick Flow heads I have Hooker Super comp. headers and used the Percy aluminum gasket and they did not seal well for some reason. The headers are rectangular ports and the heads appear to be D ports. I used the exhaust D port gasket out of a Fel Pro gasket set and no leaks so far.

The problem is they raised the exhaust port but not the bolt holes. The recommended Felpro gasket will work if you can get the top of the header to fit. I used stock exhaust manifolds and had to grind almost 1/4 in out of the top of the manifold so that it didn't hang over the port.
From what I have seen big D-port heads require 1 3/4 headers. One of the posters here mention having to grind the headers to make a closer match. I use FelPro D port gaskets because that is how the exhaust port has been shaped from a porting job.
Get stage 8 C clip locking bolts and you'll be happy for years.
Like redvetracr I cut the flanges between each of the pipes but I cut from the back and don't quite go all the way through. Leave about a 1/16th to hold the distance between the pipes but allow the pipe flanges to pull down. I use cheap header gaskets but us black silicon, nothing special just the normal silicon used to assemble engines. It does not burn out and I have no leaks.

No header leaks for a few days now! My fingers are crossed.
I installed some cheapy manifold gaskets from NAPA (MS7110X). I put a fairly thick layer of High Temp Red RTV silicone (resist temperatures up to 650*) on the side of the gaskets that face the header and I let the RTV set up for about 30 minutes before installing them.
I'm hesitant to say that my header to head leaks are gone for good but it has held for over 200 miles worth of driving so far.
I will post a follow up if they start leaking again.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. If I continue to have problems with leaks I will remove the headers, true up the mounting surface, make the recommended 'cuts' on the flange and install some Fel-Pro gaskets as suggested.
P.S. I'm getting pretty good at working with the Stage 8 Header Bolts, even with the A.I.R. tubes getting in the way!
