ZZ4 heads / exhaust header question.
I am going to switch my stock L-48 over to the ZZ4 motor soon.
What type of exhaust ports are on the ZZ4 motor ?
Will I be able to use my stock exhaust?
Will I need "special" headers, or will normal headers for a 1980 Corvette w/ 350 work.
Thanks,

I believe ZZ-4s use the Fast burn heads with oval ports. I believe the bolt holes line up but I think I was told the stock exhaust blocks the ports on C2s. Not sure about C3s. No use going to a ZZ-4 unless you are going to use headers. I know the standard small block mid year headers had the same problem as stock exhaust, they blocked the ports. Talk to a hi-perf rep at GM. I was dealing with Salle Chevrolet. http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/. They actualy faxed me a drawing of the exhaust port dimansions.

Re: ZZ4 heads / exhaust header question. (Vetteboy)
Your header choice depends on your cam choice and your exhaust system specs. Are you leaving the ZZ4 stock or going to mod it in the near future?
D shaped ports...special header flanges to mate with the heads are now available.
Fastburns are on the 385 horse version or the do it yorself ZZ430 with Hot cam & 1.6 roller rockers & 750 carb.

I wont be changing the heads any time in the next 3 years.
Maybe a new cam after a year, but that would be about it.
NOS ?? --- no I don't like to play with chemical enhancement.

I have a ZZ4 in my 80 and I'm using the stock rams horn exhaust manifolds (getting too old to deal with header leaks). The ZZ4 does not use the fast burn heads as mentioned above, ZZ4 engines run L98 heads

If using Ram Horn manifolds you are choking the ZZ4 big time.
You NEED headers.
As far as leaks go I was instructed per AFR to use a mild thread locker on my header bolts...thus far no leaks and I have removed several bolts and re-installed to to be sure they didn't stay locked in.
The ports, ZZ4 stock heads & Fastburns are "D" shaped to assist in scavanging exhaust gasses.
ZZ4 fastburn 385 horse uses fastburns obviously...
ZZ430 is the same as above with Hot Cam and 1.6 Roller Rockers.
