Default stroker cam

Will a comp cam XS290 solid lifter cam be too much for this combo?

cam specs- 290/298 252/260 .576/.598(1.6 rockers) 110LSA

Stroker 4.040 X 3.75
forged bottom end
11.1 compression
200cc Pro-topline alum. 2.02, 64cc
victor jr. intake w/1" HVH super sucker spacer
harland sharp roller rockers
750 speed demon carb
1 5/8" headers ( 1 7/8 hookers w/ sidepipes eventually)
4spd 3.73 gears

I want a 6,500-7,000 rpm motor and mean sounding idle, but I still have to power my power brakes. Will this cam be a good match for this combo?

Thanks,

L-82Kid

I can't say about the cam, but I think your heads are a little small for that RPM range. I'd figure 215 - 230 w/ either 2.05 or 2.08 intakes. The beathability may suffer on the top end.

It will have this alright! mean sounding idle,

I'm kind of a wimp when it comes to solid cams. I always went for go not show. The biggest cam I used in my 383 with flat top 64 cc heads was 240/248 112 lc.

At Wed. night cruises many cars had bad a$$ sounding machines with radical cams like yours. The 4 speed will help. I have a 13 meg movie I did with my 383 of a startup and idle. My digital camera sound kind of goes into overload from the noise. I could e-mail it to you.

I ran mine to 7500 rpm on a regular basis and the hot rodded Vipers could not take me on road racing courses on the straights from 70 mph -140 before braking

That seems like a pretty big cam, don't know if I'd go that big. Idle characteristics come from the lobe separation angle

Mike - overlap. The lower number of lobe separation angle increases overlap for a given .050 valve lift duration.

As overlap increases - reversion into the intake manifold increases creating the stecato ruff idle of racing motors.

That still sounds huge for a cam, and the 110 centers will not do you any good. Have it ground on 112 to 114 centers to reduce the overlap and compensate for the crummy idle you will end up with as a result of the longer duration. Personally, I would not venture far from the 230-240 duration range.

Aux. vacuum canister? I guess depends on how much stop and go you do.

I'm running that cam in my 385 SB right now. It idles fine at 1000 rpm. No problems at all with this cam. It really hauls from 3000 rpm and up. It is not a DD cam for sure but makes good power above 3000 rpm. I don't have vacuum brakes but it makes enough vacuum to operate the headlights. About 8 to 9 inches at 1000 rpm

I have this cam in my 383 with 195cc heads & victor jr. intake. it idles rough at about 975 rpm but works well with a 4 speed & 4:10 gear. pulls well from 2800 -7000. it did take a fair amount of carb tuning to get the low end crisp. 825 mighty demon

also, i am running 1.6 roller rockers &11:1 comp. Author david vizard has published some data on lobe centers demonstrating that stroker motors (383) like a tighter spec than 350s, just thought you may want to check it out. But having said that comp cams spe'd a smaller cam for my combo, but i would not go smaller for my use.
