Default LT4 ELECTRONICS DIFFICULTIES

SUCCESS!!!
This involves the installation of a Grand Sport LT4 with 1996 PCM(OBD 2) into a 1984 'Vette(OBD 1 will be deleted). The PCM was supposed to have had the VATS deactivated. The PCM and Harness modification work was done by a "professional" shop which specializes in automotive retrofits.
Item 1.After endless hours of tracing wires,it STARTS!!!
Item 2.It STOPS after about two to six seconds.(It "feels" like an electrical shutdown)
Item 3.Fuel gauge registers 44#-46#,engine running.Drops to 42#after engine stops.
Item 4.The PCM had been returned to the Vendor. They supposedly re-checked the VATS to ensure that it has been eliminated and test ran the PCM in a '96 'Vette,no problem.(Actually,I don't know what this would prove. The '96 Vette would have a Passkey System and a CCM to send the Serial Data to the PCM so it does not shut down the fuel injectors. My '84 does not have Passkey\CCM.After all, that's what I hired these"PROFESSIONALS"for!!!)
Item 5.I have located a Fuel Pump Relay problem.(not energized when it should be,although the Oil Pump Switch(limp home mode) was keeping the circuit energized as it should).I have repaired the relay and verified it's proper operation, however the engine still shuts down after 2-5 seconds.
Item 6.I have verified the wiring to the OPTI per the GM Manual values.
Item 7.The Ignition Control module was replaced with a new unit.(This was going to be done anyway,as I am installing a new Accel 300+ Digital Ignition and Coil Assembly and did not want to chance that the old one was weak.)
Item 8.I have FIRED the 1st Vendor and am now sending the PCM to another Electronics Vendor for a 2nd. opinion.
Item 9.The PCM was tested by Jim's Performance,Ellicott City,MD.(Jim France)The VATS is the cause of shutdown!!!He makes two modules to trick the VATS,however they were developed for OBD1 cars. Neither work on the '96 OBD2 PCM's.He suggested I take it to Ed Wright(Fastchip) in Tulsa,OK. He packed it up and shipped it from his shop to them to save time.
Item 10.I have received the PCM back from Ed Wright(Fastchip). He gets $350.00 to remove the VATS and reprogram for maximum performance.
Item 11.Ed Wright is the man!!!We are talking Plug & Play!!! No VATS, Sounds great, one happy puppy here!!!Now I'm going to try to get a rebate from the original vendor for their failure to perform.Wish me luck!!!

A Camaro SS Forum guy advised me that he had the same sequence of events.:blueangel:(Engine would start, run for 2 to 6 seconds, then shutdown.)His problem was cured by disableing the VATS system.
Is it possible for any other known cause(Computer shutdown of the engine after start & run of less than seven seconds) or have I been lied to by the Vendor? :bs

About the only other thing is if the ecm sees a low oil press.-but then it shuts off fuel so the fuel press. should drop when it dies......

Even after shutdown,Fuel Pressure was 42 PSI,pump not running.Regulator holds pressure for startup.
Yesterday A.M.,I called Electronics Vendor. His position was that the VATS "burn" may not have worked and that it sounded like that was the cause of shutdown. The PCM is on its its way to them. Will let you know the outcome upon resolution. Thanks to All

My PCM has aquired enough frequent flyer miles to vacation in Rio without me!:yesnod: The bad news is,with no additional alterations, the shop that modified it installed it on a 96 Vette and it runs fine with no VATS problem. It's back in the air and I'm back to square uno.Is it possible that this is an Opti problem?(96 GM Manual,6-311)If reference pulses are lost PCM shuts down fuel pump?I don't understand how as the pump is also supplied power thru the Oil Pressure switch.

My PCM was in Maryland for a short period of time today.Jim's Performance (Jim France)bench tested it and, behold, the VATS is shuting down the injection.I found out some things about PCM's today.Seems the Cameros\Firebirds and 95 and before Vette's can be programmed out by the average aftermarket software. The'Vette's, '96 and 2000 & up go to Ed Wright in Tulsa, which is where mine is flying to, as we speak. Can't use a module to trick the VATS either. Will keep you updated upon resolution.
