My newly aquired Alum heads have a spring pocket diameter of 1.47. My Comp cam bee hive springs have a diameter of about 1.30. Can I use these smaller diameter springs in these heads? Thanks Lee

I wouldn't see why not. Make sure you have adequate clearance for your seals too. But if all parts are compatible and set up properly, this shouldn't be a problem either.
IMO - The use of a spring cup that sits in the pocket and matches the outer diameter of your springs to sit in would "BEE" best.
I use spring cups on my BBC with aluminum heads. The cup protects the head from the spring galling the aluminum, much better than just a valve spring shim or spacer. Keeps the spring perfectly positioned so the bottom of the spring can't walk....

I'd certainly expect that he'd use some type of cup. Perhaps I was assumming. I use stock LT1 cups w/ CC 26918 beehives on my LT1 aluminum heads and they have no outer ridge. But their OD is adequate that the springs are a bit from the edge. No problems in 20K miles.
