I'm putting a new cam in this w/e and wondered if it was worth getting the Performer intake HPC coated while it's off. It'll cost around AUS$180. One other reason for doing it is to get a nice finish. I painted it with some clear heatproof paint and it went a yellowish colour with burn marks at the crossover. :(
I had my Performer RPM JET HOT coated. (top and bottom) Bottom costs extra. I don't have any scientific confirmation but it seems like it stays hotter longer. After I drive the car for any length of time the intake is the last thing to cool off. And that's hours after its been parked with the hood open. The only good thing is that it looks good.
The smartest thing is to install the blocking plate on the cross over and if your worried about oil splash is a Morroso or some othe vendor plate that fits over the cam valley.
Most FelPro intake gaskets come with a crossover metal blocking plate that you can choose to install or not. I think they even have a little round punch out that would work like a restrictor.
The best thing to do is by manifolds or heads that don't even have a crossover cast into them! ;)
Nastees intake looks great, but i don't think the HPC coating helped performance any, in fact as he mentioned, it might have hurt. On the other hand you can get coatings that either reject heat (unsulate) or dissapate heat. You can have the bottom coated to insulate it from heat and have the top coated to dissapate heat more quickly.....however this coating is usually not the best looking thing...usually black. Correct coatings can enhance performance, but i can't give you any quantitative data...maybe someone else can.
I would ask myself. Do you really need a choke? a couple of pumps and you squirt gas. Over the years I have had 4160's and 4150's and the heat round spring gets rusted from water vapor and doesn't work anyway. Your idea of blocking one side doesn't allow flow anyway. If you have the 2 into one exhaust with the side exhaust blocker. Thats another thing to get ride of. It probably quit working years ago.
I have colder weather than you and I have not thought about choke in years.
2 pumps and it fires up before you even think about it.
Chris,if you don't block off the heat crossovers properly the heat will eventually warp the mating surface{ or crack it} of the manifold.....it takes a while but it will happen sooner or later......gkull is correct, you don't need the crossover to have a choke.....look at one of the old bimetal springs or just take it off....john
