Default Difference between a Chevy 305 and a 350?

Isn't a 305 just a de-stroked 350? Are the heads interchangeable? Or does it depend on the year?

Actually, the stroke is the same (3.48) and the bore size on the 305 is much smaller. The 305 has different heads with smaller combustion chambers and smaller intake valves so as to not overhang the smaller bore.

As stated 305 has smaller bore.

You can put 305 heads on a 350 but not necessarily the other way.

A Chevy 305 has a 3.74" Bore with a 3.48" Stroke. A Chevy 350 has a 4.00" Bore and a 3.48" Stroke. So technically its just a smaller bore. The 305 heads are 53cc chambers and can be put on a 350 to increase compression, but at the minor expense of flow. Plus the 305 heads crack easily. The 350 heads come in either 64cc or 76cc chambers and would reduce compression if put on a 305, not a good combo for an already weak motor.
