Looking for an intake recommendation
It looks like I'm definitely going to a Carb style intake set up. Still not certain what will sit on top but leaning toward the carb (SCCA rules certainly favor it and it's much cheaper).
I'm running a long rod 383, Brodix Track 1's, a big mechanical roller cam (242/242 at .05 with .609/.609 lift), with 10.95 to 1 compression. The car was so far from smog legal before that there is no way it is street legal. It will be even farther from legal this time. Street use will be about 30% with mostly track time. Drag racing is secondary, road racing is most important to me. The car is still an automatic for another year or two.
I'm not really concerned with having a huge amount of torque off the line. I'm looking for mid range to high rpm power.

Because it is an automatic, I would go with the Edelbrock RPM Air Gap. This manifold is good for 1500-6500+ RPM's. American Speed puts it on their 530 HP stroker and it only gives up about 10 HP to the Victor Jr. with a LOT more torque at the lower RPM's but if you want to save a few bucks, I'd go with the Power Plus Crosswind,an exact duplicate for 169.00 or 229.00 POLISHED! http://allautogear.com/Merchant2/mer...tegory_Code=61

You have to buy an intake that fits the head gasket size. Period Do not attemp to take something like a Edl RPM that uses a max of FelPro 1205 and slap it on 1206 heads.
The best manifold in the 1206 gasket size is the 7530 or 7532 Weiand Team G. It makes the Victor Jr. look like a sad excuse for a casting. Quality control is very poor at EDL. So any way I went with the 7532 with a 1/2 inch wood spacer for heat and a no choke Demon 750 on my 383.

That's a good point regarding port/gasket size. I'm not as familiar with the Weiand manifolds, I'm an EFI guy after all, but I just helped a friend of mine build another SBC427 and he used a Victor Jr. I thought it was a pretty good looking manifold, but I've never compared it side by side vs. another brand.

It's nice having Summit Racing minutes away. That way I was able to buy all of the manifolds and bring them home to compare them. Then I just return what I don't use.
The idea of all the aftermarket intakes is to make a ram effect. To over fill the cylinders. to do this the port including the head has to continually get smaller. That way you don't get dead spots that cause A/F separation. The weiand intakes were almost perfect matches to 1206. So when the race shop matched them for me minimal time was required to port with the heads and intake bolted together.
The Weiands had smaller plenum volume than the new style Victors. which would account for their 7200 or 7800 ratings vs. 8000/8500 for Edl. The flow shop also told me that they have to add air flow helpers in the base of the plenum to really get victors to work. In a past motor I had with a tall vic. Upon pulling the heads the carbon build up in the center four cylinders was a real life indicator of those cylinders running richer than the outer four corners.

From what I've read the Weiand gives more lowend torque than the Victor. I have a 7530 on a 355 and feel it gave up little if any torque to the Lt-1/Z-28 dual plane intake I had prior and had way more top end.

I have a similar engine,long rod 383,heavily ported brodix track 1 heads...I use a rpm airgap,for racing a holley 830 annualar,on the road an edel 750....my cam is much less radical flat tappet with shaft roller/rockers....held c/r to 9.6 to compensate for road fuel.....good fun on the track with a 700R4 and 3.08.......it is in a 74R........JOHN :chevy

there a local man here that dropped an LT4 crate engine with the factory carb manifold into an 86.
He seems pretty happy with it.
Just keep in mind that certain classes do not allow body modifications, ie a hood scoop. He's using the new "Extreme" airfilter lid, that takes air in from the top. It's tight though. He has to run the adjusters full up.
Me I'd use the LT4 FI intake and run a HalTech
