I'm putting in a zz-9 cam in a couple of days on my 87 Vette with 1.6 roller rockers, I know I could call TPIS and ask what they recommend for the springs, but what I want is springs that will avoid any kind of valve float at all. I want this motor to hit 7000 rpm eventually so I thought good springs.
Is it a solid roller motor? Otherwise you won't be hitting 7K rpm with it without lifter problems. Get springs that are matched to the cam. If you are looking for making power at 7K rpm then you may want to rethink your cam choice too.
IMO - always over spring. Bigger taller springs last longer because they run cooler and never get stressed. I stayed away from H-Roller just because no company would even talk about much over 6500 maybe 7000 with rev kits.
In a hydraulic roller application I like the K-motion springs. I've run their
K-800 springs in a 383 application and the were very good. No tension lost in 3500 miles. A friend also runs these in a 396 LT1 Camaro. He's run .600 lift and lost no tension in almost 6000 miles and counting. He runs a cam with really aggressive ramps, too. K-motions are good stuff and summit sells them pretty cheap. Mine were just under $100 for the set.
Wordguy, the ZZ9 will only make power to around 6200 rpm if everything else is up to it. Even if it did go past that, the hydraulic lifters will begin to pump-up around that speed anyway. If you wanna spin it to 7000 rpm you'll have to go to a solid roller, and at those engine speeds I would put in a forged bottom end .
You can do 7000 RPM with hydraulic rollers IF you have aftermarket roller lifters AND a roller lifter rev kit is used. Otherwise, your floating valves.
