Anyone ever heard of breaking an aluminum halfshaft in a C4? Does anyone make a stronger halfshaft other than Lingenfelter(way to expensive)...post any ideas or advice thanks.....
Thanks Monty: I am still completing the 4L80E conversion...coming along great ......Are the halfshafts that Tom's sells aluminum? Do you know a round about price?.....which would you go with a Dennys or Toms halfshaft? Do you think this is a good investment if I plan on running in the 10's...and then maybe add nitrous?.....Just went to the Orlando fastest street car shoot out......great show...really got me hyped...Thanks for the reply.....
Just purchased a 4:11 dana 44 rear ...with all the goodies...shot peened/polished case, extra clutch packs, heat treated ring pinion, 1350 yokes(front and side) cold stabilized/ heat treated/gold anodized, and the same with the outer splined shafts...heat trated cold stabilized/ anodized.....spent alot of money...but I cut no corners.....think the half shafts should be replaced?
Monty, I thought Tom's did not offer any replacement upgrades for the shafts themselves.
The weak spots are the outer spindles, the u-joints, and the spider gears inside the differential. Most people find these first. I have only seen or heard of the two people spinning the actual halfshafts.
Well I made my final desicion. There are alot of ways to go. I ordered the nitrous ready 3" steel half shafts with spicer u-joints. These are custom made from Dennys drive shaft.....he told me that they would handle the most HP.(he would not even sell me the aluminum half shafts when I told him that I am hoping to make 600 HP.) They are 169.00 each with u-joints. I am also using cold stabilized and heat treated outer yokes(from Toms differential)....I think this is the best and most reliable setup...with a set of sticky slicks! .....any opinions????
I guess now I know there is an upgrade. I am in excess of 600hp an running the aluminum ones just fine as are some of my buddies. I guess when I break one I know who to call ;).
Cancelled my order with dennys driveshafts. I was told the steel will not flex like the aluminum....this will cause a break in the small bolts which hold the U straps down...they are the weakness. No one makes stronger / bigger bolts for the 1350 corvette units....aluminum allows some flex..and takes some stress of off the bolts and straps.
Was headed the same direction you were and made the change back to aluminum. There is a shop in Florida that was going to make up a special bolt and strap set up though.
Actually changed my mind again. I have the shafts being made. Spoke to Denny for 45 min. He would not even sell me aluminum upgrade halfshafts..he could have gotten double the money....he said you will not break the straps or bolts.....he has 25 years experience....he said the factory aluminum/any aluminum halfshaft will fail....he said it has no flex..it is brittle and will break. He said breaking a bolt or strap will occur if 1. bolts not torqued correctly 2. weak universal 3. cheap universal 4. very bad universal angle at start (squatting). He sounds very knowledgable....and told me I could cancel my order...with no problem....he WOULD NOT sell the aluminum to me..he told me he didnt want his name on something that will not withstand the HP and would break. I bought the halfshafts..they are on their way.!!!!!!!!
It is coming along great....fabricated a bracket to hold the torque tube/c arm...will need to shorten the c arm 3 inches..and get a custom drive shaft...tranny fit in very well....clearanced approx 2" on each side for exhaust..tranny fits with no clearance problems.....Will post more as it is completed...going to be real nice/and durable when finished!....
