Noticed on a block I got back from a machinist had what looked like a metal puck, or washer epoxied to the front of the block. What is the purpose of this? Warranty ?
Upon initial startup the motor ran WAY lean and the thing slid down about an inch. Damn headers were glowing like a flouresent light within a minute of startup. (Had to break the cam in)
It could be a magnet, used to attract metal shavings/particles. Most builders tend to put them in the lifter valley area though, or attached to the bottom of a steel oil pan.

That is about the only protection that the machinist/engine builder has when someone comes back in with some kind of problem. It has lead in the center that will melt out at 255 degrees and that will show that the engine was overheated and thus ends all warranties.
