Default Copper Head Gaskets

I'm Building up a 454 for my tow vehical. And after having the block decked and putting in longer rods and matching pistons I need to have a head gasket that is .050" thick to acheive proper quench. So SCE Titan copper gaskets are pretty cheap from Jegs.

So here's the question, what are the chances that this copper gasket will seal without orings on a low comrpession (9.2:1) with a low operating rpm (1500-5000)? This is supposed to be a low dollar build up and my only other option is Cometic at almost double what I can get the SCE Titan gaskets.

You have your pistons sticking .010" - .015" OUT of the hole? Chances are good that the copper gaskets will hold just fine without O rings, if that is the way you decide to go.

RACE ON!!!

Heads up! Both Corteco's "stock" AND "performance" head gaskets measure .053", aren't "copper", and just install and torque. The same as Fel-Pro's. They go on a high number of units over here. And they aren't expensive. Not a single failure to date.

They also have "ready-to-install" copper also but recommend the block be "O-ringed". Most copper ones NEED the "O-ringing" to function correctly, regardless of brand.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. The part number for the "standard" BB head gasket is a 20324CS and the copper, pre-coated" is a "CC2027" (.053" thick) for a 4.530" bore. They can be used on all 396 thru 540 BB's with respect to bore sizes. They do have other sizes but these are the "popular" ones! These are used by Augustine Herrera on his "Goodguys" winning 7.22 ET @ 190 MPH unit! One pair per season.
