Default A/C removal

Well, after 30 minutes of trying to figure a way to route my serpentine belt that bypassed the AC, I decided it wasn't possible without changing pulleys from smooth to grooved and vice-versa.

So, does anyone know of a piece that bolts in place of the A/C compressor for the L98 engines? ('88 specifically)? Or does anyone know someone who machines this kind of stuff? Or am I just blind and there is a way to reroute the belt?

What you can do is reroute the belt "around" the belt tensioner (not like it was before). You can do one better and purchase groved belt tensioner pulley, because when you do this the groved side of the belt will be riding on the smoth pulley. I was running with non groved for one year and had no problems. I just recently eliminated belt tensioner all together too :yesnod:
You will see in my sig that A/C and air pump is also gone

I made my own pulley and mount that takes the place of the A/C and idler pulley. I set it such that it still provided a good amount of "belt wrap" around the water pump so it would be less inclined to slip and cause over heating problems. I had to move the pulley locatin around a bit until I could get an off the shelf belt to fit. It's not pretty but it certainly works. And I've tested it to 6700 rpm... yikes!

Just route the belt around the tensioner the other way and don't worry about it needing a grooved pulley. I run my car as hard as it can be run and have had no problems running it this way. To get the correct belt length I just cut the old one, held it in place around the pulleys and such, and overlapped the ends. Then I took a pencil and made a mark where they overlapped. I took it to the parts store and they put the cut belt on their measure and I got a belt a slight bit shorter than that since I couldn't have been holding it super tight around all the pulleys when I made my mark. I could probly go out and see what number mine is if ya really want to know. I have the air pump eliminator on my car so if you don't have that I think the belt would be different size. Sorry about the terrible picture here, I gotta take some shots in the sunlight I guess.

Thanks for the replies, I'd appreciate that belt number if you could give it to me, Bob86ZZ4. For now, I guess I'll reroute the belt, then remove all I can for weight savings.

CHarris- How did you go about making the pulley, did you fab it yourself?
