I'm currently running "492" angle plug heads on an LT-1 shortblock. I've never seen any port volume or flow numbers for these heads and am wondering how they stack up to the L-31 Vortec heads? Would they be an upgrade?
Out fo the box, the vortec heads will outflow your 492 heads. Vortec heads don't mesh well with pop-up pistons. So, if your pistons have domes, you're better off having your heads done.
I had a set of 461X heads done by Mike Stark at www.cfmperformance.com . My heads now outflow just about any comparably sized aftermarket head.
Vortec's are 64cc chambered heads...they are worth 40-80 hp over
the 492's depending on how you cam...they outflow them by almost 40cfm..Raised Runner design...require a different intake.
492's flow around 200cfm
Vortecs.. 239 cfm... with 170cc ports.. Ebay/used/$300 a pair
Thanks for the info. Just what I was looking for. I didn't know about the popups being a hinderance with the Vortecs. Actually I guess they block flame travel with any head. Looks like just a light bowl clean-up and minor port work will fill my needs. Thanks again
