Use a Victor Reinz Nitroseal gasket. They have the much loved thin gasket pn 5746 or the same material available in a .45 compressed gasket. Either of these are great and you can get them at NAPA. I found that out from the Victor Reinz tech guy. Napa repackages them in their lame colors and sells it as a high performance gasket. The Victor Reinz part numbers carry over to the Napa repackaging.
I used to run the #5746's but now have to run the fat version to keep my compression ratio in check. Don't wanna run over 10.5 to 1 with my Carburetor now!
As far as the cleaning prep. I always use some good brake cleaner. That stuff gets rid of everything :) Always buy the one that says extremely flamable- it's better than the less flamable version :)
I've always had good luck with Felpro. Try their high performance line of gaskets with the "printoseal" feature. This is most important: make sure the head faces and block deck faces are FLAT! If they're more than a couple of thousandths out of flat you're going to continue to have problems. Also, make sure the head bolts have plenty of sealer on the threads or you may have a coolant leak from there. I use lacquer thinner to clean the joint faces (because it works and I usually have some around) but brake cleaner is a good idea too.
