I am planning on building a 383 from scratch. My question is a 6 inch rod or the 5.7?? I have heard the 6 inch is better but has more piston side wear.

No actually the longer rod slightly reduces side loading. The only minor downside is a higher pin location but this is really not cause for concern if everything's done right. I like the 6" rods and use them for their advantages. Get the lightest, quality H-beams that you can afford and the lightest pistons too. Eagle makes a 445 g. H-beam that's rated to 500 HP. I think they're good for more than that though because they're popular with amateur sprint car guys and they beat the hell out of a rod. Get the upgraded, optional bolts for even more security. Try to keep combined piston and pin weight under 540 g.

Personally myself, I like a longer rod. You get less weight at the furtherest point from the crank. Which means quicker revs. I am running a .400 longer rod in my 4.25 stroke big block (505ci).

I have to ask...... Why a 383? There’s simply no reason to build a 383-cubic-inch small-block with a 4-inch bore block when you can have a 406 or 412-cubic-inch small-block for about the same money.

Thanks Guys,
I never thought about anything bigger than a 383 because I haven't found the formula for those sizes. If you have a source I would like to investigate it. I am always looking for more Cubes!

400 small block.

The 383 crank is from the 400 small-block. The 400 has a bore of 4.125.

i am doing a 396 stroker right now and have all the part numbers you will need to do it. i got it as a kit and it is an all forged assy. i reused my 350 block because i have a lot of time and work into it already. the kit is an eagle 3.875" stroke crank with a 6" h-beam rod and srp flat top pistons. if you are going with another block might as well just go big block and get some serious power and tq.

How much did you pay for the kit. What type of compression ratio are you expecting w/ those pistons? Thanks in advance.

the kit was $1600 shipped. it came with clearenced h-beam rods and upgraded arp rod bolts. the comp is at 10.5 to 1 with my afr 195 75cc heads that were milled to 72cc by afr before they were shipped. the kit also came balanced. i had it rechecked at the machine shop just to make sure and they got close to the same numbers that were on the card just 1 gram diff. here are the rods and pistons with the specs.
